Among the reasons Bill Maher rejects the Bible is the assumption that the Bible lays out a 6000-year timeline for Earth while scientists claims it’s as old as several billion years.
But the Bible does not assert that the Earth is 6000 years old. That myth stems from a chronology most popularly published in 1650 AD by the Archbishop of Armagh, James Usher. Usher compiled the male lineages from Adam through Solomon as given in the (Hebrew) Bible plus the biblical and historical records from Solomon through the destruction of the temple and Babylonian captivity plus historical records of other cultures from the captivity through Jesus.
Usher’s chronology, plus our own account of the past two thousand years, then, reveals a six thousand (plus) year history of the human race, not the Earth, as the Earth was created “In the beginning…” We don’t know when that was. How much time elapsed between the creation of the Earth and the creation of man (Adam)? According to our best scientific evidence several billion years.
The earliest books of the Bible were written in Hebrew. Translation from Hebrew is not a trivial matter. There often can be several valid meanings. The King James Version of Genesis 1:2 reads “And the earth was without form, and void…”. However, an equally acceptable Hebrew translation would be “And the Earth became a waste and a desolation…” (For a nice discussion of this issue click here)
If the Earth became a waste, then at some time earlier it was not (a waste.)
“And the Earth became” is the meaning that best allows science to coexist peacefully with creation.
